Rolls-Royce was interested in vertically integrating their purchasing systems to reduce costs and paperwork.  They contacted several pipe manufacturers and suppliers for ways to reduce their acquisition costs of pre-fabricated pipe for one of their projects.  Maddox was chosen to perform the labor to assemble the pieces in pre-engineered sections.

Company Profile

Rolls-Royce is a power systems designer, manufacturer, and supporter of power systems for land, sea, and air.

Technical Situation

Not everyone is equipped to fabricate large pipe.  Pipe sizes of 24-30” were called for on the project as well as flange weights that approached 2 tons.  To perform the project successfully, the fabricator needed space, rigging equipment, and the expertise in how to properly fit, test, and weld the large diameter pipe.

Trades Required

Pipefitters.

Solution

By utilizing a construction plan, reserving the appropriate manpower, and maintaining an organized shop area, Maddox was able to fabricate, clean, paint, and test all of the required sections on time.

Benefits

Rolls-Royce was already familiar with Maddox because of projects performed on their site.  In many cases, contractors will attempt to hold onto material markups as a way to boost margin, but this really only benefits the contractor, not the end user.

By working creatively with the materials supplier and Maddox, Rolls-Royce was able to get what they needed, at a price far below current market pricing, and not sacrifice anything to get it.
