Marathon is a supplier of gasoline and distillates to resellers and consumers within the Midwest, upper Great Plains, Gulf Coast and southeastern regions of the United States.

Business Situation

Marathon operates many terminals in the Indianapolis and surrounding area. Marathon had used a group of nationwide core contractors, but was finding that there were situations and job types that did not always align with their core base. Due to the strict safety requirements for contractors working on and around gasoline pipelines, the local contractor base from which to choose was not very large. As a contractor that could perform in their entire range of needs, from replacing doors on buildings, to hot tapping active terminal piping, Maddox had the ability to fill in the gaps.

Technical Situation

Marathon needs their contractors to fully understand all terminal work is hazardous. Every person needs to understand that full attention to the task, understanding of the hazards, and knowledge of how to mitigate those hazards are just the basics. But being safe is not everything. Pipe welding at Marathon requires the highest level of attention to detail, planning, and safe hot work practices. Rounding out Marathon’s needs are quality workmanship, good communication with the tight-knit crews that man the terminals and good problem solving skills.

Trades required: Pipefitters, Welders, Millwrights, Carpenters, Concrete Carpenters and finishers.

Solution

Although working safely was part of Maddox’s daily routine, working to Marathon standards was a little bit more to chew off. Maddox decided to invest in upgrading the safety program to encompass Marathon’s requirements. A total rewrite of the safety manual, procedures, and documentation was completed and accepted by Marathon’s auditors.

Working on small projects first, Maddox became familiar with working in the terminal environment. Over time, as both groups became familiar with each other, the scope and complexity of the projects increased. Maddox has performed concrete work on containments, pipe installation and modifications, hot tapping services, general construction and repair, rigging, and fabrication services.
